Ancient fishing village
The favorable orographic condition and the calm waters have always made it a safe haven.
In this oasis with a sandy bottom joined many since the ancient Romans as well as numerous fishermen from Taranto and Gallipoli who became settled in this area. Some Roman columns lie not far from the coast.
The sixteenth-century defensive tower that rises in the center of the village, called Cesarea, is the center from which the urban settlement radiates.
In the stretch of sea of the Municipality, three other coastal towers mark the perimeter and are part of the defensive system that runs through the entire Salento Peninsula wanted by Carlo V. From the north, Torre Castiglione is found, today reduced to a ruin, followed by Torre Lapillo, 17 meters high , in excellent condition and at 3 km as the crow flies, further south, Torre Chianca which guards two inlets where the Chianca island and the Malva island emerge. The fishing fleet of the seaside village is composed of small hulls dedicated mainly to fishing under the coast, a renowned and appreciated fishing in the capital where our men of the sea display their catch.
