The Marine Biology Station that stands here has a naturalistic museum, part of the Museum System of the University of Salento.
In the seabed of Posidonia a settlement among the most important of the entire Mediterranean, natural indicator of the quality of the sea. The karst origin of the territory forms numerous submerged caves or grindings, in the vicinity of "Torre Lapillo", there is a high concentration of them.
Here there are centuries-old candelabrum sponges, large fin mussels, seahorses (Hippocampus guttulatus) and colorful fish.
The creek known as the "shallow Strea" is home to the characteristic large Geodia brain sponge that lives in a subtropical environment.
The Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area is divided into different protection zones, click on the plan to improve the observation.
Zone A
It is an "Integral Reserve Area", totally protected, only monitoring and environmental scientific research are allowed.
Zone B
"Partial Reserve Area" with the authorization of the managing body, professional fishing, bathing and underwater activities are allowed with precise behavioral rules.
Zone C
The C or "General Reserve Area", allows anchoring to special buoys and spearfishing.
On windy days numerous sails and windsurfers peek out and excursions and snorkeling activities with support boats are possible.
